FOSTER WHEELER, USA (FW)

JANUARY 2007 – JANUARY 2008 (CONTRACT)
SENIOR CIVIL-STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

Member of the design team tasked to investigate and re-evaluate the existing Coke Structure to support a bigger coke drum. The coke structure and supporting tabletop measures about 170 ft. long on the longitudinal direction, 65 ft. long on the transverse direction with a total height of 325 ft. high to the top elevation of the derrick. Functions performed;

  • Calculation of empty, operating, wind, seismic and lift loads based on ASCE-07 code.
  • Generated computer model (STAAD Pro) based on as built drawings and apply updated loads based on the vendor data for the bigger coke drum and updated wind and seismic loads based on ASCE-07.
  • Evaluated existing derrick structural sufficiency based AISC 9th edition requirements.
  • Checked, analyzed and evaluated existing tabletop capacity based on ACI-318-05 requirements.
  • Discussed proposed modifications with the lead engineer on how to reinforce existing structure to withstand construction, lift (derrick) and updated loads for the proposed coke drum and potential construction issues.

Project: T-1200N Fractionator Tower, Valero Refinery, Port Arthur, Texas
Member of the design team tasked to investigate and proposed subsequently modification on the existing tabletop concrete structure supporting the 20-foot diameter x 110 feet high fractionator tower. Functions performed;

  • Calculation and application of empty, operating, hydro test, wind and seismic loads transferred by the fractionator tower to the supporting tabletop based on IBC2006 and ASCE-07 codes.
  • Generated computer model (STAAD Pro) based on as built drawings. Applied loads due to T-1200N Fractionator and updated wind and seismic loads based on ASCE-07.
  • Checked, analyzed and evaluated existing tabletop capacity based on ACI-318-05 requirements.

Project: Reliance Project, India Refinery
Involved in the design of miscellaneous pipe support and design of remaining miscellaneous structural steel structures/concrete support foundations left in the punch list for final client submittal. Member of the project design team tasked to meet project milestones for final project submittal. Coordinated with the design team to ensure meeting client schedule and project dictated milestones.

Project: Foster Wheeler - Chevron Refinery, El Segundo, California
Proposed, coordinated and checked modification works as required by the turn-around construction group.

  • Detailed engineering design of E522/E535. Steel Structure braced in both direction supporting 6 (six) Exchanger Vessels stacked on top of one another. Design model was made in such a way that the bracing configuration were made to accommodate maintenance, pipe access and supports for the exchangers while trying to meet AISC recommendations for structures in high seismic zones. Floor to floor distances was also designed to accommodate the requirements dictated by the exchanger configuration while trying to maintain optimum column unsupported length. Lateral drift and vertical deflections were also controlled to meet the rigid requirements of having six exchangers maintain the same referenced centerline.
  • Detailed engineering design of E-512, E-588 & E-555 Foundations. Size and configuration of the resulting foundations were made complex by the presence of existing underground structures proximity to the super structure making the analysis of the combined foundation complex due to eccentricities brought about by the resulting foundation configuration.
  • Detailed engineering design of VFD Support Foundation and Lean Oil Chiller System Foundation.
  • Coordinated with the design team to coordinate information from site, as built drawings and proposed structural configuration to avoid potential clash problems.
  • Collaborated with the site engineering team charged of supporting the Crude and Coker Area turn-around construction team (assigned at El Segundo, California site).
